Ask An Alum: A practical guide for Online Mentors

Ask An Alum is an online tool designed to help knowledge sharing between IDS alumni, without the pressure to develop a long-term mentoring relationship. 

How to become an Online Mentor for Ask-an-Alum

Opt in to being an Online Mentor by completing the following steps:

  1. Log in to the IDS Alumni Network 
  2. Go to your profile. You can find this by clicking your name on the right hand side of the home page.
  3. Edit your details: add a photo, opt in to Online Mentoring, and select topics you can support with
  4. Edit mentor status: here you can find extra controls, e.g. limiting how many mentees can contact you at one time.

 

 

 

How does the Ask An Alum search work?

Online members of the IDS Alumni Network can find Online Mentors through Ask-An-Alum Search. Search results will bring up Online Mentors who match search criteria, with Featured Online Mentors highlighted at the top of the list. Search results will not show members who have opted out of mentoring, have limited message requests, or do not match search criteria.

Requests from Ask An Alum

Online Mentors will be notified of Ask An Alum requests via email from the IDS Alumni Network website. You will see the message of the alum requesting your advice, and a series of options for your response. By clicking your preferred response option, your decision will be communicated to the IDS Alumni Office.

If you are unable to help, you will be redirected to update your mentoring settings. 

If you select to help, you will be redirected to your IDS Alumni Network messages, where you can reply directly.

From here, you can whatever communication platform suits you and the alum seeking your advice. Please still ensure to click the response link in your email. This allows the IDS Alumni Office to monitor the system.

Support for Online Mentors

Once you have opted in to being an Online Mentor, you are added to the Mentors Group and will be invited to join Mentoring Skills Workshops hosted by the Alumni Office.
