Ask an Alum: Help with your first message

Help with your first personalised message to an Online Mentor via Ask-an-Alum

Once you've found an alum you would like to connect with on Ask-an-Alum, you can message them directly. We have compiled the following tips to help you draft a message to leave a good first impression:

  1. Introduce yourself
  2. Be clear on what type of advice you are looking for. It is good to have an opening question planned.
  3. Reference something specific about their experience or expertise, or something you have in common
  4. Be polite and professional
  5. Check your message for spelling and clarity. Keep it short.

Once you have made contact, the next step is to arrange a conversation. The mode of communication can be agreed based on what suits both mentor and mentee best. Sessions typically last between 30-60 minutes. In your conversation, you can elaborate on your initial question. Be specific and clear about your discussion points, but go into the session with an open mind. You can still learn, even if your mentor cannot answer a specific question.
