IDS offers a number of key benefits to the postgraduate alumni network and the IDS Bulletin is Open Access and free to all.

IDS email-for-life

The Email-for-Life is a service available to all IDS alumni; it is a permanent email address, with an option to redirect mail from that account to another email address. Alumni report having used their email-for-life for job applications; connecting with other alumni; staying in touch with IDS etc.

Discount on IDS Short Courses

Postgraduate Alumni are eligible for a discount on short courses run by and hosted at IDS, up to 20%. The discount will be offered to Alumni who meet the individual course criteria, and priority will be given to those applicants from less well-resourced organisations. Future online booking will allow you to indicate that you are an IDS postgraduate alum.

Continued Student rates on IDS accommodation

If you are attending a short course or are keen to visit IDS to give a seminar, meet the current students or connect with researchers, you will continue to receive student rates for IDS accommodation. You will need to to see if a room is available on the date required, providing your name and course details. These will be used by our facilities team to verify your status with the alumni office. Price per night is £40 (student rate) which is made up of £33.33 plus £6.67 VAT.

Access to the British Library for Development Studies (BLDS)

IDS Alumni have access to the University of Sussex Library which includes the BLDS collection, and free remote access to JSTOR e-journals subscribed to by the University. Details of how to gain access to JSTOR are on the University website. Alumni can also join the University of Sussex Library to gain borrowing rights at a discounted rate. The library hosts a useful Development Studies Guide which supports the BLDS Catalogue Search. Additional benefits from the University of Sussex Alumni office

As a former IDS student, you are also an alum of the University of Sussex, and all the benefits of being a Sussex Alum are open to you. These include getting advice from the University of Sussex’s Careers and Employability Centre (CEC) up to three years after you graduate; access to other campus facilities such as the Sports Centre and Conference venues; discounted accommodation in Brighton, and an NUS Extra card.
