Mentoring & Advice Programme: Guiding principles

Guiding principles for both mentor and mentee in our IDS Alumni Network Mentoring Programme (all three schemes - ask-an-alum, matched mentoring and group mentoring).

Confidentiality. Discretion and confidentiality are expected from both parties as you may be privy to privileged information.

Mentees drive the relationship. They must take the initiative and take responsibility for actions taken because of mentoring. The more a mentee puts into the relationship they more they get out.

Mutual trust and respect. A successful mentoring relationship is a dynamic process where each learns to respect and trust the others commitment and expertise, but choice and style still play important roles. Both parties must be prepared to give constructive feedback and avoid being defensive when negative but constructive criticism is given.

Ongoing and effective communication. The relationship will be focussed with clear goals and expectations, listening skills are important. Both mentor and mentee must find the right balance between talking and listening.

IDS Alumni Network Mentoring & Advice Programme Codes of Conduct apply to all mentors and mentees who are using the IDS Alumni Network Mentoring & Advice Programme to connect and build a relationship.

If at any time you are concerned about your mentor or mentee, please speak, in confidence, to the alumni relations and engagement office. email: alumni@ids.ac.uk.
