Sussex ranked first in world for development studies

2 March 2018

The QS University Rankings 2018 have ranked the University of Sussex first in the world for development studies.  This is the second consecutive year that the University has been ranked first, and the fourth consecutive year that it has been ranked in the top two universities globally for development.  Overall UK Universities have performed well in the ranking, with ten of the 48 subject tables being led by UK institutions.

Ranking reflects long-standing partnership between IDS and University of Sussex

The result reflects the quality, impact and range of international development research and courses offered across the Sussex campus that includes IDS’ research and teaching programmes.

 IDS Director Melissa Leach said:

"It’s wonderful news that Sussex has been ranked first in the world for development studies for a second year running.  The range of postgraduate teaching programmes that IDS and Sussex offer, alongside our world-class research, are going from strength to strength.  Together we are offering solutions to pressing global challenges such as sustainability and inequality and nurturing the next generation of leaders who will continue this much needed work.”

Head of the University of Sussex’ School of Global Studies Andrea Cornwall said:

“I'm delighted to see our excellence in Development Studies recognised in this way. It's a real testament to the wonderful work that our inspiring and committed colleagues across the University of Sussex campus are doing.”

A leading global institution for development research, and teaching and learning

Earlier in 2018 the Institute was also ranked second out of 132 international development think tanks in the 2017 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report, moving up two places from its ranking in the 2016 index. It was also ranked fourth out of 90 university-affiliated think tanks, a reflection of its important and long-standing partnership with the University of Sussex.
