IDS offers a number of key benefits to the postgraduate alumni network

IDS email-for-life

The Email-for-Life is a service available to all IDS alumni; it is a permanent @alumni.ids.ac.uk email address, with an option to redirect mail from that account to another email address. Alumni report having used their email-for-life for job applications; connecting with other alumni; staying in touch with IDS etc.

Discount on IDS professional development and learning short courses

Postgraduate Alumni are eligible to apply for an exclusive IDS Alumni bursary on professional development and learning short courses. This single award, funded by IDS, is in the form of a 20 per cent course fee discount. It is subject to terms and conditions, and will be offered to at least one applicant per short course. Remember to say on your application form that you wish to be considered for this bursary.

Discount on ELDIS Key Issue Guides and Collections

ELDIS has provided free access to relevant, up-to-date and diverse research on global development issues for over 20 years and offers paid for guides and collections that help keep ELDIS free for the 500,000 users of it's services. If you are are looking for a cost effective alternative to creating a new website for your programme or project ELDIS Guides and Collections might be solution you need and IDS alumni get an exclusive 10% discount (to claim the discount just tell the ELDIS team that you are an alum). Remember that there is no charge for adding individual pieces of research to the (open-access) repository. Just email the alumni office if you have a paper etc. you would like to add to ELDIS.

Access to Library Services, including BLDS, JSTOR, and UoS Library

IDS Alumni have access to the University of Sussex Library which includes the BLDS collection, and free remote access to JSTOR e-journals subscribed to by the University. Details of how to gain access to JSTOR are on the University website. Alumni can also join the University of Sussex Library to gain borrowing rights at a discounted rate. The library hosts a useful Development Studies Guide which supports the BLDS Catalogue Search. All library-related queries should be referred to library@sussex.ac.uk.
Accessibility to BLDS is  being improved thanks to Wellcome Trust Funding (announced March 2019).

Additional benefits from the University of Sussex Alumni office

As a former IDS student, you are also an alum of the University of Sussex, and all the benefits of being a Sussex Alum are open to you. These include getting advice from the University of Sussex’s Careers and Employability Centre (CEC) up to three years after you graduate; access to other campus facilities such as the Sports Centre and Conference venues; discounted accommodation in Brighton, and an NUS Extra card.
