Whilst the study of leadership has been a preoccupation in management sciences, it is not yet acknowledged as an area of major interest in development studies. And yet it shapes nearly all of development work. Leaders are needed in all walks of development - whether for creating new NGOs to support neglected social groups; or whether to mobilise the public to ensure that our collective actions match our collective ideals; or whether to direct private sector investments to serve consumer needs; or whether to ensure public sector bureaucracies produce valuable public goods. In all these examples leaders organise, innovate, manage and drive change in complex and difficult contexts. Leaders not only have a vision, but also have many characteristics and talents to deliver their vision. Leadership is therefore an expression of democracy, participation and empowerment and without a steady supply of leaders - generation after generation - a country cannot develop sustainably

Institute of Development Studies Alumni Association, Bangladesh invites you to a seminar which will showcase the achievements of three high achievers in Bangladesh; who have been playing an iconic role in their respective sectors in promoting female entrepreneurship in the leather industry sector; integrating information and communications technology (ICT) into the health service delivery in the rural areas and mainstreaming marginalised overseas labour migrants’ voices in the national level policy making processes. These leaders will reflect from their experiences to discuss what is a leader? what is leadership? And how can leadership be developed for development in Bangladesh?

The seminar marks 50 years celebration of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), at the University of Sussex, Brighton, UK.  The IDS Alumni Association, Bangladesh is a group of individuals who have their footprints at IDS; making a mark in Bangladesh ranging from development, journalism to tourism, and private sector. It is a platform for alumni members to share their knowledge, experiences and build professional network. The forum often organises seminar, and discussion sessions to observe special national and international days.
